“Pride goes before destruction, and a haughty spirit before stumbling.” (Proverbs 16:17) The thing that drives so many people relentlessly is pride. We work and push and strive so that we can prove that we are worthy; we are the best; we deserve top honors. The danger in this is that the underlying hidden message is: I can gain righteousness all by myself, on my own merit, by my own ingenuity and energy. And that is heretical . . . because ultimately this philosophy says: I really don’t need divine righteousness and I will find lasting joy in my own achievement, which will bring me ultimate satisfaction. Both of these ideas are dead-end roads found on Fantasy Island!
