"Clothe yourselves with humility toward one another, for God is opposed to the proud, but gives grace to the humble." (1 Peter 5:5) Humility is a state of mind -- an attitude. It is a preset mentality that determines ahead of time thoughts like this: I care about the people around me. I don't always have to get my way or be first. I'm going to help someone else win, I'm going to curb my competitive tendencies. When we have these preset thoughts, instead of thinking about receiving, we will think about ways that we can give. Instead of holding a grudge against someone who offends us, we will be anxious to forgive. And instead of keeping records of who we've helped, we'll instead delight in forgetting the deeds and going about virtually unnoticed. Then, any hunger we have for public attention will be diminished significantly!
